Milonga Europa: A New Beginning

I began dancing Argentine tango in Washington, D.C. in 1997.

At that time, everything was new to me: the music, the embrace, the walking, and the feeling of connection. I was discovering another world.

Around 1999 or 2000, I began organizing a monthly milonga in the Washington, D.C. area. It was not a business plan. It came from passion. I wanted to dance. I wanted to share tango. I wanted to create a place where people could come together and experience the spirit of Argentine tango.

During that period, I also invited instructors from Buenos Aires. It was a wonderful time. There was a weekly milonga I could attend, and people came regularly to dance, meet, listen to music, and share the evening together.

Looking back, I realize how precious that was.

After that, my life became more mobile. I traveled, moved, and lived in different parts of the world. I lived in the United States, Argentina, Switzerland, and now Germany. Except when I am in Buenos Aires, there is one thing I have always missed: a regular milonga I can go to every week, at the same time, with familiar faces and a shared feeling.

I have visited many milongas in Europe. I have written about them. I have reflected on them. Sometimes I enjoyed them. Sometimes I left with a feeling that something essential was missing.

For me, a milonga is not only a place where people dance tango. A true milonga carries a culture. It carries respect, music, códigos, invitation, waiting, listening, floorcraft, silence, embrace, and shared presence.

This is what I learned in Buenos Aires.

Over the years, I have learned not only as a dancer, but also by observing organizers, DJs, and friends who have dedicated themselves to keeping the traditional spirit of tango alive. I learned from the way they prepare a room, choose the music, welcome people, protect the floor, and create an atmosphere where tango can happen naturally.

That experience has stayed with me.

For a long time, I have been speaking with friends about the need to preserve, promote, and cultivate traditional tango outside Buenos Aires. It has been a dream, but also a mission.

Through Tango Zen workshops, especially at Benediktushof, I have also met people who are beginning their tango journey with sincerity and openness. Some are experienced dancers. Some are just starting. But many of them understand that tango can be more than steps. They feel that tango can become presence, connection, and meditation.

One of those people was Anne, who participated in my Tango Zen workshop at Benediktushof. After her second workshop, we had a chance to speak more personally and share our thoughts about tango, meditation, and community. As both a dancer and a yoga instructor, she understood the importance of this work and recognized the spirit behind Tango Zen.

During that conversation, I shared with her my dream of creating a small tango community in Europe, rooted in traditional tango and shared presence. Anne happened to live in a community where there was a historic building, once connected with a religious organization, now converted into a beautiful place with a ballroom.

She spoke with the owner, and gradually the possibility opened. When I saw the place, I felt as if it had been waiting for us.

This week, I spent several days here with Anne, exploring the venue, accommodation, transportation, meals, and all the practical details. Now, after many conversations and much preparation, we are finally ready to make this announcement.

So I began to ask myself:

Can we create a place in Europe where these two worlds can meet?

Can experienced dancers who love the traditional tango culture of Buenos Aires meet people who are beginning their tango path through Tango Zen?

Can we create a small community where tango is danced with attention, respect, musicality, and heart?

This is how Milonga Europa was born.

Milonga Europa will take place from 12 to 14 March 2027 in the Prichsenstadt area, near Würzburg, Germany. It will be a small invitation-only tango weekend, limited to about 40 dancers.

It is not intended to be a large festival. It is not a commercial event. It is a pilot program — a first step toward creating a new European tango community rooted in traditional tango, shared presence, and the spirit of Buenos Aires.

I am putting into this project my effort, energy, resources, experience, and passion for traditional tango. I am also bringing what I have learned from many friends, organizers, and DJs in Buenos Aires over the years.

But I cannot do it alone.

Milonga Europa needs the support of friends, dancers, DJs, and Tango Zen workshop alumni who share the same spirit. My hope is that together we can continue this journey in a more tangible way.

We can dance together.

We can learn from one another.

We can preserve, promote, and cultivate traditional tango in Europe.

Milonga Europa is a new beginning.

Entonces empecé a preguntarme:
