The Mature Dancer Becomes a Beginner Again

Beginner's Mind After Thirty Years of Tango

Last week, I wrote about what it means to become a mature tango dancer. At the end, I wrote:

After thirty years of tango, I consider myself a mature tango dancer. And at the same time, I still consider myself a beginner.

Perhaps that sounds contradictory. How can someone dance tango for thirty years and still call himself a beginner?

It depends on what we mean by beginner.

I Don't Know

When we first begin tango, we don't know. That is natural.

We enter a class and think: I don't know tango. Show me what to do.

Very often, that means: Show me the steps.

We assume there is something we don't know, and someone else knows it. So we want to acquire it.

We learn movements. We learn technique. We learn how to lead or follow. We learn about music. We practice. We gain experience.

Little by little, the empty page begins to fill.

I went through this process too.

I learned. I practiced. I danced. I made mistakes. I traveled. I danced with many different people. I spent years in Buenos Aires. I listened to countless tangos and spent countless hours in the embrace.

Thirty years passed. And strangely, I find myself back where I started: I don't know.

But those words mean something very different to me now.

I Don't Need to Know

The beginner says: I don't know. I need to know.

Today, I can say: I don't know. I don't need to know.

I don't need to know what movement will come next. I don't need to decide what I am going to do during the next musical phrase. I don't need to show what I have learned. I don't need to prove that I have been dancing for thirty years.

The music begins. I embrace my partner. And I am there.

My page is blank again. Not because nothing has been written on it. Quite the opposite.

Thirty years of experience are there. The music, movement, embrace, mistakes, discoveries, people, milongas—all of it has become part of me.

But I don't need to bring all of that knowledge into my conscious mind and ask: What should I do now?

I listen. I feel. I receive what comes. And I respond.

A Blank Page

When I began tango, my page was blank because I didn't know anything. Today, my page is blank for another reason.

I don't need to write the next movement before it happens.

That is a very different kind of beginner.

The first beginner looks at the blank page and wants to fill it. The mature beginner can look at the blank page and leave it blank.

There is no anxiety about what should come next. There is no need to fill every moment. There is no need to demonstrate anything.

Something will come. The music may bring it. My partner may bring it. The embrace may bring it.

Or perhaps, for a moment, nothing comes. That is okay too. I can wait.

Becoming a Better Beginner

Several years ago, I wrote about beginner's mind in tango. At the time, I ended with a sentence that still stays with me:

“Each time I dance, I become a better beginner.”

Today, I understand that sentence more deeply.

Becoming a better beginner does not mean knowing less. It does not mean throwing away thirty years of experience.

It means that experience has become part of me deeply enough that I no longer have to hold on to it.

Perhaps this is one of the paradoxes of maturity.

At first, we want to acquire. We want to know. We want to do. We want to become better.

But after enough experience, perhaps another possibility appears.

We can let go. We can listen. We can feel. We can allow something to happen without knowing beforehand what it will be.

And perhaps this brings me back to something I have been thinking about for a long time:

It is not just about doing. It's about being.

When I began tango, I didn't know anything, and I needed to know.

Today, I don't know what will happen next—and I don't need to know.

The music begins. The embrace closes. The page is blank.

And once again, I begin.

No sé

Entonces queremos aprenderlo, adquirirlo.

Aprendemos movimientos. Aprendemos técnica. Aprendemos a llevar o seguir. Aprendemos sobre la música. Practicamos. Ganamos experiencia.

No necesito saber

El principiante dice: No sé. Necesito saber.

Hoy puedo decir: No sé. No necesito saber.

No necesito saber qué movimiento vendrá después.

Abrazo a mi pareja.

Hoy, no sé qué sucederá después, y no necesito saberlo.

Empieza la música. Se cierra el abrazo. La página está en blanco.

Y una vez más, vuelvo a empezar.

Abrazo Milonguero,

Chan
